How can you mend a broken heart? Imagine if you could do it with a band-aid. Soon, doctors may be able to do just that, with band-aids made from molecules that can repair tears in muscle cells and cell membranes. That vision is what drives Regents Professor Frank Bates and other researchers at the University of Minnesota to transform how doctors treat patients with congenital heart defects or who are recovering from heart attacks. “We could save thousands of lives each year,” Bates says, “Not bad for a band-aid.”
